My 5e Monster Manual Stays on the Shelf. Here's What I Use at the Table.
The official D&D 5e Monster Manual is essential, but what's the best tool for quick lookups at the table? Discover a fast, free alternative for in-game monster stats.
Let me be clear: I love my D&D 5e Monster Manual. It’s a beautiful book, filled with incredible art and fascinating lore that sparks countless ideas for my campaigns. It's an essential part of my prep process, a source of inspiration I return to again and again. It sits proudly on my shelf, a testament to years of adventure.
But at the actual game table? In the heat of combat, when the energy is high and the players are waiting for my next move? That beautiful book stays on the shelf.
The At-the-Table Problem
Every DM has been there. Your players do something completely unexpected, and you need the stat block for a creature you hadn't planned for. The game grinds to a halt as you flip through the index, search for the right page, and then try to absorb all the information while five other people stare at you. It's a momentum killer.
At the table, your needs as a DM are different. You don't need the three paragraphs of lore about a creature's mating habits; you need its Armor Class, its hit points, and its actions. And you need them *now*. A physical book, as wonderful as it is, is simply not the fastest tool for that specific job.
My Digital Companion
This is why my most-used tool during a session isn't the book itself, but a fast, clean, and searchable digital bestiary. Having a tool like our Monster Manual open in a browser tab is a game-changer. I can find any creature from the core rules in seconds, get the information I need at a glance, and keep the game moving.
The official books are for inspiration. A digital tool is for execution. They aren't mutually exclusive; they're two sides of the same DM coin. Use the 5e Monster Manual during your prep to choose your monsters and understand their stories. Then, at the table, use a fast, digital reference to run them effectively.
Your At-the-Table Bestiary
Keep your beautiful D&D Monster Manual on the shelf for planning and inspiration. When the dice are rolling, use our fast, free, and searchable Monster Manual to keep the game moving.
